Abstract

900,309. Mine roof supports. MINING ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. May 22, 1959 [May 29, 1958], No. 17120/58. Class 20 (2). A mine roof support comprises an hydraulic reservoir 10 and an hydraulic accumulator 13 separated by two axially-yieldable tyres 11, 12 and a piston 25 and cylinder 26, connected by valves and so arranged that yielding of the support under roof pressures charges the accumulator 13 and compresses an air-filled tyre 14 therein. The tyres 11, 12 are clamped to a ring 17 and to annuli 18, 19 on the reservoir and accumulator respectively. The tyres 11, 12 may be replaced by flexible bellows. The support is provided with a water inlet valve 21 and an air inlet valve 35. Excess roof pressure causes the tyres 11, 12 to yield, contracting the piston 25 and forcing water from its cylinder 26 into the tyres 11, 12 via a spring-valve 27. At the same time water is forced from the tyres 11, 12 into the accumulator 13 via a valve 29 compressing the air in the tyre 14. An overload relief valve 23 is provided which is also operated manually to collapse the prop. To reset the prop, a valve 28 is operated manually to release the water under pressure in the accumulator 13 into the cylinder 26 to extend the piston 25 and thus the support. The support is preset by operating a valve 31 to release water from the accumulator 13 into the tyres 11, 12. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 835,142.
