Abstract
899,764. Coating with metals; metals cleaning. AMERICAN RADIATOR & STANDARD SANITARY CORPORATION. Aug. 9, 1960, No. 27602/60. Class 82(2). [Also in Group XXXVI] The side edge portions of aluminium ribbon are rendered solderable, so that they may be soldered to other materials, e.g. copper tubes of heat transfer coils, by providing the ribbon in a roll 10 having a plurality of convolutions 12 (see Fig. 1), the roll having side surfaces formed by the edge portions of the ribbon, applying a zinc coating over the entire side surfaces of the roll such as by immersing the roll in a dilute solution of sodium zincate (zinc oxide and caustic soda), and thereafter applying a coating of solderable metallic material over the zinc coating, such as by electroplating copper, tin, bronze or silver, whereby when the roll is unwound only the side edges will be coated with the solderable material. As shown in Fig. 4, after the ribbon is washed and dried, it may be slit longitudinally to form two strips of ribbon having the solderable material coated on only one side edge. Preferably prior to applying the solderable coating the zinc coated roll is electroplated first with copper (copper strike in Fig. 3). Also prior to zinc coating the surface of the roll may be cleaned by immersing it in a solution of 3% sodium carbonate and 3% sodium phosphate; two coatings of zinc may also be applied, the first one being removed by nitric acid (see Fig. 3).
