Abstract

899,613. Press-button retractive switches; indicators for switches. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND) Ltd., S. Oct. 27, 1960 [Nov. 4, 1959], No. 37408/59. Class 38 (5). [Also in Group XXXV] A push-button switch which is operated manually to disengage an aircraft automatic pilot (see Group XXXV) is provided with a greater opposition to operation when the automatic pilot is functioning than when the automatic pilot has been disengaged. Operation of a push-button 59, Fig. 3, moves contacts 72 relative to fixed contacts (not shown) to deenergize self-holding relays (not shown). An electromagnet 56 connected in parallel with the relays attracts an armature 63 and thereby increases the initial force necessary to operate the push button. If, however, the operator experiences only the much smaller resistance of a spring 64 when operating the push button, he knows that the relays have already been deenergized and the automatic pilot disengaged by some other means. A spring 62 provides a further increase of resistance to operation when a telescopic member 61 meets a fixed member 52 during operation of the push button.
