Abstract

899,257. Compression moulding ceramic material. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 31, 1958 [Jan. 3, 1958], No. 42196/58. Class 87(2). Ceramic material is moulded in a compression moulding machine wherein the material is fed through a duct to a die or dies as a suspension in a liquid preferably having a low viscosity and a closure member of the die or dies is provided with apertures for discharging the liquid during the moulding operation. The closure member 16 is pressed down by plungers 15 on to a moulding plate 7 which houses an annular member 8 with a cylindrical wall 9 embracing dies 10, the cavities of which are open at the beginning of the cycle. Suspension material is fed to the dies through a bore 23 in a cylindrical extension 5 from the main press plunger 2. When enough material has been fed, the moulding plate 7 is pressed further downwards, the plunger 2 remaining stationary, so that punches 6, carried on the extension 5, are pressed into the die cavities and surplus suspension liquid is expelled through a porous plate 21, filter 22, apertures 18 and an aperture 20. The article is thus formed. The plunger 2 then rises, as do plungers 4 in buffer cylinders 3, the latter elevating the member 7 and 16. When a certain position is reached the plungers 4 cease their movement but the plunger 2 continues, the moulding plate 7 being stationary, and the articles are ejected, the closing member 16 being likewise pressed upwards. When the articles are entirely pressed out of the die cavities the plunger 2 stops, but the plungers 15 move the member 16 slightly further upwards so that the articles can be removed. In a modification, ducts may be formed in the puncher 6, filters being fitted over their ends. In another modification, the closing member 16 may be replaced by an upper plunger, with ducts and a filter, between which and the lower plunger the material is compressed. Coils carrying an electric current may be disposed in cavities 24, 25, the dies being made of non- magnetic material so that the ceramic is exposed to a magnetic field, or heating and cooling elements may be housed in the cavities.
