898,956. Tubular stranding machines. MARTIN, BLACK & CO. (WIRE ROPES) Ltd. Sept. 23, 1958 [June 27, 1957], No. 20397/57. Class 109. A stranding machine provided with a rotary carrier in which may be rotatably mounted on support means bobbins of wire with their axes in line with the carrier axis has a driving connection between the carrier and each bobbin support means that allows the bobbins to rotate faster than the carrier as the wire is unwound. A machine divided into compartments by plates 21 has a clutch plate 43 rotatably attached to each plate 21, each clutch plate 43 being provided with a pin 44 to engage a bobbin Z and a centre 29. The edge of the clutch plate 43 is gripped between the jaws of a slip clutch carried by the plate 21, the jaws being spring loaded and adjustable to vary the grip of the jaws on the plate and hence vary the tension of the wire of the bobbin Z. A centre 28 is adjustably mounted in an adjacent plate 21 so that the bobbin Z can be mounted between the centres 28, 29. To remove an empty bobbin, a key is inserted in the end 52 of a shaft 51 thus rotating a bevel wheel 53, crown wheel 54 and hence a nut 50 so that a threaded sleeve 48 is retracted and with it the centre 28. A fresh bobbin Z inserted through apertures in the tubular casing by means of ramps attached to the plates 21 is rested on rods 37 so that its base is slightly below the centres 28, 29. The shaft 51 is then turned by the key in the opposite sense to move the centre 28 towards the centre 29, which causes the bobbin Z to be raised from the rods 37 and held in operative position.
