Class 100(1) A collapsible spindle on to which tape is wound comprises a plurality of equally spaced pillars, e.g. 2, 3, 4 and 5 mounted on a plate 1 rotatable on a spindle 7, the longitudinal axes of the pillars being parallel to the spindle axis and equidistant from such axis during a winding operation, such that a tape may be wound into a reel about the pillars, a gripping device to secure the leading end of the tape, and a release device carrying one of the pillars and rotatable with the plate during winding, but movable relatively thereto to facilitate removal of a wound reel. As shown, the pillar 5 is carried by a slide 6 having a slot 12 engaging a boss 11 on a guide member 10 secured to a spigot 9. A shank 13 of the pillar 5 engages a slot 14 in the plate 1, thus permitting radial movement of the pillar 5. The pillar 5 is urged outwardly'into winding position by springs 15, but may be retracted to remove a wound reel by rotation of a cam 19 secured to a handle 21 rotatable on the spindle 7. The cam 19 engages a pin 16 carried by the slide 6; the pin 16 can also engage a groove 33 in the cam to hold the pillars 5 in retracted position. The slide 6 carries a sleeve 30 of compressible material, e.g. rubber which co-operates with a bracket 27 secured to the pillar 3 to grip the leading end of a tape to be wound. A plurality of tape locating grooves 34 may be formed in each pillar at varying distances from the plate to align the edge of a tape correctly on the pillars; if desired the grooves may be filled with a coloured substance, e.g., wax.
