Abstract

898,945. Friction gearing. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 21, 1958 [Oct. 23, 1957], No. 33605/58. Class 80 (1). [Also in Group XXXVIII] In a disengageable friction reduction drive for a rotatable platform 1, Fig. 1, e.g. in a gramophone or tape recorder, wherein the shaft 3 of an electric motor frictionally engages a large diameter portion of a wheel 5 whose smalldiameter portion engages a friction surface on the platform 1, the intermediate wheel 5 being laterally displaceable to disengage the drive, the shaft 8 of the wheel 5, or a journal thereof, is held by a spring 18 against the end surface of a fixed support 16 positioned to prevent vibration of the wheel 5 in a plane containing the axes of shafts 3 and 8. This plane is arranged parallel to, or at a small angle to, the tangent at the point of contact between wheel 5 and platform 1 so that the support 16 reduces the extent to which motor vibration affects the uniform peripheral speed of the platform 1. As shown the shaft 8 is carried by an arm 9 pivoted at 10 to an arm 11 which is movable about a fixed pivot 12, to engage or disengage the drive. A relay 14 holds the arm 11 in the engaged position against the action of a spring 15. In the disengaged position the shaft 8 seats in a cut 20 in the end of the adjustably fixed support arm 16. In a modification the intermediate wheel is carried by an arm whose pivot lies in the plane containing the axes of shafts 3 and 8 and the spring 18 acts between this pivot and the shaft 8 to prevent vibration of the wheel 5. The motor and friction gearing shown may be used to provide a smooth drive to the take-up reel of a tape recorder having no capstan.
