Apparatus for piling material comprises an endless driven conveyer belt 10, which is carried by a frame 12 mounted by a ball-andsocket joint 37 on an advancing bogie 30, which runs on rails 34, the opposite end of the frame being supported on a bogie 31 adapted to move to and fro along a rail track 61 arranged transversely to the rails 34, so that the delivery end of the belt is swung through an arc as the bogie 30 is advanced, and the material thereby distributed to form a pile. The advancing bogie 30 includes a winding drum 42 with which is associated a ratchet-wheel adapted to be rotated step-by-step by a pawl carried by the frame 12 so that as the latter swings to and fro a cable 46 anchored at 47 is wound up on the drum 42 to advance the bogie 30 and hence the frame 12. During this advancing movement the frame 10 slides over the transverse bogie 31 by rails 50 on the former engaging supporting rollers 55 on the latter. The bogie 31 is driven by a motor 32 controlled by two reversing switches 71, actuating plunger 72 of which engage ramps 73 at the limits of movement of the bogie. Motor 32 drives one of the two track-engaging wheels 60 through reduction gearing. When the frame 12 has advanced a distance equal to the length of rails 50, screw jacks each comprising a screw 85 operating in a housing 86 pivoted to the bogie, and a nut 88 engaging the screw and pivoted to an arm 90 on a shaft 83, are manually operated to rotate the shaft 83 which in turn operates parallel linkages 81, 84 to lower four wheels 80 into engagement with rails 62 forming extensions of the rails 34 and crossing the rail 61. This raises wheels 60 from the latter rail so that the bogie 31 can be advanced to a new position where a second set of rails 61, 62 is provided. The rails 62 of this second set are subsequently joined to the rails 62 of the first set by rails 34. Legs 100 on the frame 12 carry feet 101 for smoothing the material over the ground in preparation for each further set of rails 61, 62. The belt 10 is fed via a shoot 19 from a shuttle conveyer which also runs on the rails 34 in overlapping relation with a main fixed conveyer from which the material is received.
