This invention relates to certain improve ments in prcs-es-and has relation more particularly to adevice of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in provide a press including a movable plunger or ram anda feeding mechanism and having novel and improved means whereby the-op.-
eration of the feeding inechanisn'i is under control of the plunger or ram whereby said feeding mechanism is caused to operate intermittently.
A still further object of the invention to provide a device of; this general character having novel and improved means whereby the movable parts thereof are eli'er. ively maintained against movement upon disconnecting, the device. from its source of power.
The invention consists in the details of construction. and in the conil'iiiiation and arrangen'ient of the several parts of my improved press whereby cert-( in important advantages are attained. and the device is rendered simpler, expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claims.

16 denotes a plunger head or ram provided adjacent its opposite ends with the upstanding transversely disposed flanges 17 which are pivotally engaged with the lower extremities of the rods orpitmen 18, the upper extremities of said rods or pitmen 18 being in pivotal engagement with the horizontal bar 19. The ends of the bar 19 are rotatably engaged with the chains 9 whereby it will be perceived that reciprocable movement will be imparted to the plunger or ram 16 upon the travel of the chains 9. Furthermore, it is to be particularly noted in Figs. 2 and 5 that the pivotal connections between the rods or pitmen 18 and the flanges 17 are offset transversely relative to the positions of the shafts 7 and 11 so that upon downward travel of the rods or pitmen 18 a direct vertical thrust will be imposed upon the head or ram 16.
The opposed faces of the posts 3 are provided with the vertical guide-ways 20 substantially U-sh'ape in cross section and having their opposite extremities overlying the opposed faces of the beams 1 and the bars 4, As herein embodied, the flanges 17 are comprised in the substantiallv rectangular frames 21 extending upwardly from the head or ram 16 and having the vertical bars 22 thereof positioned within the guide-ways 20 whereby travel of the head or ram 16 in a fixed vertical path is assured. In order to assure requisite strength for each of the frames 21, l find it of advantage to have the vertical bars 22 connected by the crossed struts or braces 23.
, Each of. the shafts 11 has atli'xcd thereto. a gear wheel 25 in mesh with a small gear 26 fixed to the shaft 27 disposed longitudinally of one of the beams 1 and rotatably supported by the bearings 28 secured to the upper surfaces of the members 14. One extremity of the shaft 27 is provided with av gear 79' d i e ha tfi i The means for shifting the belt 34 relative to the pulleys 32 and 33 as herein en}- bodied, comprises the member 35 disposed at the outer face of the front beam Land having its forward extremity disposed through the guide 36 carried by the beam 1, while the opposite or inner extremity of the member 35 is supported by the link 38 pivotally engaged with the member 35 and with the beam 1. The outer extremity of the member 35 is provided with the upstanding arms 37 coacting with the belt 34 in a conventional manner.

In practice, I find it of advantage to pro- 35 vide means whereby the ram or head 16 and the other movable parts-of my improved device are positively locke'd against movement when the,belt 34 is engaged with the loose pulley 33-and for this,,purpose I provide the shaft 30 with the band wheel 42 with which coacts the band 43, one extremity of the band being secured to the forward beam 1 and theopposite extremity secured to the crank shaft 44. The shaft 44 is provided it with a rock arm 45 overlying the member 35 and adapted to be engaged by thei upstanding projection 46 carried by the member 35 whereby it will be perceived that as the member is moved to shift the belt 34- from the fixed pulley 32 to the loose pulley 33, the rock arm will be engaged by the projection or extension 46 to impart'sutii- (-ient axial rotation to the crank shaft 44 as to cause the band 43 to frictionally engage the band wheel 42 and thus effectively brake the device.
The rear beam 1 is provided with the longitudinally spaced vertical uprights 47 with which is engaged the hop er 48 adapted to discharge within a boxl when oper-v atively positioned below the head .or'Flfam 16 and the material, such as cotton, is adapted to be delivered directly within the hopper 48 from the condenser C, as is particularly shown in Fig. 2. The discharge of the cotton or other material within a box B, during the period that the plunger or head 16 is within the box, is under control of the gate 49 carried by the longitudinal marginal portion of the head or ram 16 adjacent the hopper and as is particularly disclosed in Fig. 5, it will -be noted that the gate 49 is connected with the ram or head} 16 by the resilient members 50 which permit 126 the gate 49'to assume a vertical position as the head or ram enters the box B so that said gate will offer no obstruction to the travel of-the head or ram 16. I also find it desirable to provide the lower marginal 11(- dering said operating means inoperative, and a braking means for the plunger operable under the influence of the last named means, both of said last named means being operable in unison.
4. A device of the character described comprising a plunger, a hopper discharging in advance of the plunger, a feeding mechanism within the hopper, said mechanism comprising a stationary crank member disposed through the hopper, a hollow body rotatably supported within the hopper and disposed around the crank, said crank being offset relative to the axial center of the hollow member, fingers loosely engaged with the crank and disposed through the hollow member, and means for rotating said hollow member.
5. A device of the character described comprising a plunger, a hopper discharging in advance of the plunger, a feeding mechanism within the hopper, said mechanism, comprising a stationary crank member disposed through the hopper, a hollow body rotatably supported within the hopper and disposed around the crank, said crank being offset relative to the aXial center of the hollow member, fingers loosely engaged with the crank and disposed through the hollow member, and means for rotating said hollow member, said hollow member being angular in cross section.
6. A device of the ch: acter described comprising a plunger, a. hopper disclnirging in advance of the plunger, a feeding mechanism within the hopper, said mechanism comprising a stationary crank member disposed through the hopper, a hollow body rotatably supported within the hopper and disposed around the crank, said crank being offset relative to the axial center of the hollow member, fingers loosely engaged with the crank and disposed through the hollow member, and means for rotating said hollow member, said hollow member being triangular in cross section.
7. A. device of the character described comprising a reciprocating plunger, a lo tatable feeding member delivering in advance of the thrust of the plunger, a source of power, a fixed pulley carried by the feeding member, an idle pulley carried by the feeding member, a belt coacting with the pulleys and the source of power, means for normally maintaining. the belt in engagement with the idle pulley, and means carried by the plunger coacting with said last named means for throwing the belt in engagement With the fixed pulley.
8. A device of the character described comprising a reciprocating plunger, a rotatable feeding member delivering in advance of the thrust of the plunger, a source of power, a fixed pulley carried by the feeding member, an idle pulley carried by the feeding member, a belt coacting with the pulleys and the source of power, means for normally maintaining the belt in engagement with the idle pulley, and means carried by the plunger coacting with said last named means for throwing the belt in engagement with the fixed pulley, the means carried by the plunger serving to hold the belt upon the idle pulley during the period the plunger completes its return stroke and is initially on its thrust stroke.
