Abstract
898,643. Laminates. LEWIS, J., and RUBBER IMPROVEMENT Ltd. Oct. 20, 1958 [July 30, 1957], No. 24168/57. Class 140. In machine belting of the type comprising a carcase of one or more plies of fabric containing natural and/or synthetic fibres impregnated or covered with a plastic composition and bonded to a substantially impermeable cover comprising outer layers and edge strips, moisture lost from the fibres during manufacture is restored by exposing the carcase to water through an incomplete or permeable cover, preferably by immersing the belting in water, and the cover is then sealed or completed. To effect penetration of the water the outer layers, or one of the layers, may be perforated, as by passing the belting between spiked rollers, or by use of a pricking tool, either before or during immersion of the belting, the perforations being subsequently closed by layers or coatings as of P.V.C., applied if necessary with heating and/or rolling, or by hot-rolling the belting. In further modifications, the perforated belting may be sprayed with water or immersion may be effected before the belting is complete, e.g. before application of the edge strips. Immersion is preferably effected to a depth of at least 2, preferably 4 feet, and the belting or the water may be heated before, or both together may be heated after, immersion. The water used may contain a wetting agent, a fungicide, a fireproofing agent, a preservative or any or all of such materials.
