Abstract

Raw hides are cured by applying to the inner surface thereof an absorbent unsized paper or paper substitute which has been charged with sodium chloride or other preservative salt by saturating with a solution of the salt and drying out the solvent, or by adding the solution to the pulp before the absorbent web of paper is laid on the paper machine. A disinfectant may also be added. The paper may have added to it three times its weight of the salt. The paper may be impregnated by immersing in or passing slowly through a bath containing the salt in highly concentrated solution and is then dried, preferably by passing between heated rolls. In use, several hides may be piled on top of each other with interposed layers of the paper, or each hide may be folded with the paper attached.
