833,818. Preserving wood. ALLGEMEINE HOLZIMPRAGNIERUNG Dr. WOLMAN G.m.b.H. Sept. 19, 1957 [Dec. 10, 1956], No. 29496/57. Class 140. A preservative wrapping or cover for wooden poles and the like comprises a sheet of foam rubber or foamed plastics material such as polyvinyl chloride, polyurethane or polythene, impregnated with a paste-like preservative composition containing hydrogen fluoride, hexavalent chromium and a binding agent. Such a sheet may be wrapped around a pole below ground level and secured by nails. A waterproofing coating, e.g. of bitumen, may be applied, or a binder impervious cover layer, e.g. of polyvinyl chloride or polythene, may be secured over the wrapping, its top and bottom edges being sealed around the pole by nails or adhesive. As shown in Fig. 6, the cover layer 2 is attached to the wrapping 1 and may have marginal parts 6 coated with an adhesive such as polyisobutylene. Alternatively the upper and lower margins may carry strings which are wound over the margins and secured to the pole by nails. In Fig. 9 a circular cap for a pole comprises impregnated foam material 1 and a cover 8 of impervious material which may have apertures to admit some degree of rain or moisture. The foam material may be impregnated by dipping or coating, or may be made in two peripherally joined layers between which the impregnating material is introduced. The pasting material may comprise polyvinylacetate or polyvinyl acetate/chloride, or a pasty mixture of polyacrylic acid and carboxymethyl cellulose, and the preservative may comprise potassium bifluoride, sodium arsenate, and sodium bichromate.
