Class 52(2) A chair (Fig. 1) has at each side a side frame 2 which consists of a front leg 4, a rear member 6 the lower part of which constitutes a rear leg 8 and the upper part of which constitutes a back support 10, a top side rail 12 joining the top of the front leg to the top of the rear leg, and a lower side rail 14 joining the front leg to the rear leg at about their mid height; the two side frames 2 being joined together by a seat 16 secured to the top side rails 12, a back 18 secured to the back supports 10, and two cross rails 20, 22 joining the front legs together and the rear legs together, the rear cross rail 22 being a little above the lower side rails 14; the seat 16 extending laterally somewhat beyond the top side rails 12; the two side frames diverging from one another downwards sufficiently to enable one chair to be stacked on another (Fig. 2) with the rear members 6<SP>1</SP> of the upper one just in front of the rear members 6 of the lower one, and with the lower side rails 14<SP>1</SP> of the upper one resting on the seat 16 of the lower one; and the rear part of the seat is reduced in width or stopped short, so as not to obstruct the passage of the rear legs 8<SP>1 </SP>of the upper chair outside the rear part of the top side rails 12 of the lower chair. As shown in Fig. 2, the top side rails 12 slope slightly downwards rearwards, while the lower side rails 14 are horizontal. This brings the centre of gravity of the stack nearly above the centre of the bottom chair.
