Abstract

898,191. Valves. SARCO INTERNATIONAL CORPORATION. July 15, 1959 [July 17, 1958], No. 24288/59. Class 135. A three-way rotary sector valve comprises a casing 1, Fig. 4, having three connection sockets 2, 3, 4, two of which have a common axis which is at right-angles to the axis of the other. The sockets 2, 3, 4 lead respectively to communication ports 6, 7, 8, each extending over 120 degrees and defined by radial partitions 9, 10, 11 extending from a boss 12. The ports 6, 7, 8 lead to a transfer chamber 27, Fig. 3. The sector-shaped closure member 23 is loaded by a spring 22 and is fixed to a spindle 14, the lower end of which is located in a bore 13 of the boss 12 and the upper end of which is journalled in a bushing 15 screwed to the casing cap 16. The upper end of the spindle 14 is splined at 28 to receive an internally splined elliptical gearwheel 29 which meshes with a similar gearwheel 30 carried by a bushing 38 mounted on a pivot pin 39 screwed to the cap 16. A control handle and pointer 46 is fixed by a grub screw to the bush 38 and co-operates with a scale on a plate 50 fixed by spacer bolts 51 to the cap 16. Two abutment screws co-operate with projections on the handle 46 to limit its movement to 180 degrees. The valve can be used as a hot and cold water mixing valve or as a flow dividing valve. The T-shape disposition of the port axes allows of different orientation of the valve casing to suit the disposition of the connecting pipes. The connection of the gear 29 to the spindle 14 by splines allows a plurality of different positions of the gear 24 relative to the plate 23. The use of helical gears 29, 30 causes the closure member 23 to rotate at an increasing speed for uniform movement of the handle 46 and so give the valve a linear characteristic. If the hot and cold water connections are interchanged the gears 29 and 30 are inverted and the plate 50 reversed. Uniform rotation of the handle 46 then causes the spindle 14 to rotate at decreasing speed. If the handle 46 is fitted directly on the spindle 14 an intermediate disc having kidney-shaped ports is located between the casing shoulder 26 and the plate 23. It is suggested that a cylinder segment closure member may be used.
