Abstract
A process for the production of neutral alkali metal salts of iso- or terephthalic acid, or a mixture of ortho-, iso and terephthalic acids from the free acid comprises heating the iso- or terephthalic acid or mixture of ortho-, iso- and terephthalic acids at a temperature of 250 DEG C. to 370 DEG C. with neutral alkali metal phthalate or alkali metal biphthalate under a pressure of 0.1-1.5 atmospheres with constant stirring whereby phthalic anhydride and reaction water formed continuously distil from the reaction mixture. In a modification a stream of inert gas is passed through the reaction vessel at a pressure of 1.0-1.5 atmospheres The examples relate to the production of neutral potassium terephthalate and isophthalate mixtures thereof and sodium isophthalate. In Example 8 the reaction is carried out in a heated ball mill through which carbon dioxide is passed.
