Abstract

A process for purifying terephthalic acid by heating with water to a temperature between 230 DEG and 280 DEG C. and cooling the resultant solution to a temperature between 180 DEG and 230 DEG C. so that purified terephthalic acid is selectively crystallized comprises carrying out the dissolution and crystallization of terephthalic acid in vessels constructed wholly of non-ferrous materials or having only an inner lining of a non-ferrous material. Titanium is the nonferrous material specified. An example is furnished in which a titanium autoclave is used. In a comparative example a stainless steel autoclave is used. The terephthalic acid produced is esterified with ethylene glycol and the ester produced is polycondensed in the presence of antimony trioxide.
