Abstract

Crude terephthalic acid containing impurities other than p-toluic acid, such as p-acetyl benzoic acid, phthalic acid, isophthalic acid or benzoic acid, is purified by heating with water to 230-280 DEG C. and cooling the resultant solution to a temperature not below that at which the impurities start to separate out and separating the terephthalic acid which crystallizes out. The impurities may be isolated by further cooling of the residual aqueous solution. In a modification, the purification is conducted continuously by feeding the heated solution of crude terephthalic acid to a crystallizing zone where the crystals of terephthalic acid are allowed to settle while the mother-liquor passes on. In a further modification, the settled crystals may be passed into a vertical tube where they fall by gravity against a slow stream of clean water at the crystallizing temperature, the clean crystals being withdrawn from the bottom of the tube. Examples are given.
