Abstract

1370411 Esterification of aromatic dicarboxylic acids and glycols MONTECATINI EDISON SpA 20 Sept 1972 [20 Sept 1971] 43615/72 Heading C2C A process for continuously esterifying aromatic dicarboxylic acids with glycols comprises continuously feeding to a reaction zone, at least one aromatic dicarboxylic acid and an excess of glycol at least a part of which glycol is in the vapour state and maintaining in the vapour phase at the reaction zone a glycol content of at least 90% by weight of the total non-inert constituents of the vapour phase; the operating conditions being selected so as to produce a glycol aromatic dicarboxylic acid molar ratio in the product of from 1 : 1 to 5 : 1. The glycol vapour can be introduced as a saturated vapour or as a superheated vapour. The glycol vapours fed to the reactor can be diluted, if desired, with an inert gas, such as nitrogen or carbon dioxide. Suitable temperatures and pressures for the esterification of terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol range from 200 to 300‹ C. and 1 to 10 abs. atm. respectively.
