Abstract

An aromatic dicarboxylic acid is obtained by a continuous process which comprises oxidizing a corresponding dialkyl aromatic hydrocarbon and partially oxidized derivatives thereof in the liquid phase in the presence of an organic solvent and of a metal-containing catalyst with molecular O 2 under a superatmospheric pressure and at a temperature of 105-150‹ C. in a balanced system, wherein fresh aromatic hydrocarbon is fed at a rate which is the same as that at which the resulting dicarboxylic acid is formed, some of the reaction mixture is withdrawn, the resulting dicarboxylic acid is separated therefrom, the residue is recycled to the system, the hold-up time is at least the sum of the reciprocals of the first order reaction rate constants for the reaction, e.g. and the amount of aromatic hydrocarbon is maintained at a concentration of at least 0.1 mole per cent of the total of the aromatic hydrocarbon and its oxidation products. An example is given for the production of terephthalic acid.
