Abstract

A process for carrying out the partial oxidation of ethylene with oxygen to ethylene oxide in the vapour phase is described. In the process, the mixture containing ethylene and oxygen or oxygen-containing gas is fed to a heating zone packed with inert materials and subjected therein to heat exchange, the heated mixture then passes into a reaction zone packed with catalyst, where the oxidation of the organic compound takes place, next to the heating zone, and finally the reaction products obtained are cooled in a third zone which is or is not contiguous with the preceding zone, with or without inert packing, the heat removed in the cooling zone being used in the heating zone. The apparatus for carrying out such reactions comprises a tube-bundle and shell reactor divided on the shell side by two partitions into three zones.
