Abstract

897,079. Rifles and ammunition clips. STERLING ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Nov. 28, 1960 [Dec. 8, 1959], No. 41740/59. Classes 9(1) and 119. A Short Magazine Lee-Enfield rifle, constructed to use 0.303 inch rimmed type ammunition is modified for firing U.S.A. type 7.62 mm. (0.30 inch) rimless ammunition. The modifications comprise:- (1) Replacing the barrel or modifying existing barrel and chamber to take the 0.30 inch ammunition. (2) Provision of new magazine. (3) Extractor replaced by one having a claw designed to engage in the groove of the rimless ammunition and to bias the cartridge towards the side of the rifle provided with an ejector device. (4) A projection or recess provided in the boltway to engage the base of the cartridge to ensure its positive ejection. (5) An adaptor fitted to the bridge of the rifle to accommodate the standard rimless ammunition loading clip and provided with recesses for engaging projections on the clip. The existing barrel may be modified by rechambering and electro-plating the bore to reduce its diameter or the existing barrel may be swage-hammered externally to reduce the bore. The magazine comprises two sheet metal interengaging components i, i<SP>1</SP> Fig. 6 formed with internal ribs k to ensure correct feeding and at one side of the magazine a projection n Fig. 3 engages a pivoted catch o to retain it in position, a release member q being provided for finger operation. The ammunition clip f Figs. 8, 9 is formed from sheet metal and is channel shape in cross-section with inturned edges g for engaging the grooves of the cartridges and thus enclosing the base portions thereof within the clip.
