Abstract

A bolt head conversion allows rimless cartridges to be used instead of rimmed cartridges. The bolt head has a recessed cartridge face so that the base of the cartridge is retained within the head of the bolt. The extractor is a sliding plate shaped at the end to match the cartridge rebated rim so as to grip the cartridge rim under tension on the opening and withdrawal of the bolt. The ejector is a plunger spring loaded in the bolt face and when the bolt is withdrawn and the cartridge has cleared the barrel, the force of the spring plunger pushes the cartridge away from the bolt and ejection is accomplished.

Description

Bolt head conversion for the no.4 & no.5 Enfield rifle to take a rimless cartridge viz. 5.56mm Nato (223 Remington).
The conversion consists of a new bolt head with a recessed cartridge face so that the base of the cartridge is retained within the recess.
Extraction is accomplished by a sliding extractor held with a slot machined into the guide side of the new bolt head and is retained by a ball bearing and spring.
Ejection is achieved by a spring loaded plunger located in the recess of the bolt face opposite the extractor.

Claims (1)
