Abstract

896,771. Tanks. CHICAGO BRIDGE & IRON CO. March 10, 1961 [April 21, 1960], No. 8800/61. Class 69 (1). A cylindrical storage tank has a seal 13 between its wall 14 and a floating roof 10 comprising a thin flexible, impervious protective envelope 17 enclosing a relatively thin, normally planar, slab 16 of compressible resilient material of which the edges are fixed so that the slab assumes an arcuate shape. The envelope 17 is of fabric coated with an elastomer. The slab 16 is of polyurethane foam. The seal 13 is supported on metal straps 22 bolted to the roof 10 and carrying an assembly of curved bars 18, 19, 21 and 22 which are interconnected circumferentially around the roof (Figs. 1 and 2, not shown). The assembly comprises the bars 21 and 22, each with a washer bar 18 and 19, between each set of which the slab 16 with the envelope 17 are bolted, spaced apart on rods 26. The bar 18 is narrower than the bar 19 and an extra thickness of the slab is inserted at 27 so that the top of the seal has an upward bias as shown in Fig. 4. The seal may be placed at the level of the roof-top to serve as a weather seal as well as a vapour seal (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown).
