[Also in Group XXXI] Acceleration of an hydraulic ram 15, Fig. 4, in a tractor power-lift system are restricted by a slow-opening valve 80 which limits the rate of change in the flow between a pump 10 and the ram 15 independently of the pressure in the system. The valve 80 comprises a piston 84 loaded by a spring 89 to engage a valve seal 88 between the inlet and outlet ports 81, 82. Leakage flow through the piston 84 is permitted by small bore passages 86, 87 and in the event of a pressure build-up at the inlet 81 resulting from closure to exhaust at a control valve 20 the leakage flow permits the piston 84 to move at a predetermined rate to give the desired rate of increase of flow at the seat 88. Return flow to exhaust from the cylinder 15 is permitted by a non-return valve 91 which may be replaced by a second valve similar to the valve 80 for restricting the return flow.
