[Also in Groups XXVI and XXIX] A ram-and-cylinder unit 19 for loading a thrust member 12 of a ball mill comprises a liquid chamber and a gas chamber separated by a movable separator 25 and arranged so that the total volume of the chambers is increased by extension of the unit and vice versa, a liquid pressure source 29 connected to the liquid chamber and operative to maintain a substantially constant value therein, and a pressure gas storage means 31 connected to the gas chamber through valve means 32 preventing flow of gas back to the storage means, the gas pressure being at least equal to the liquid pressure. The thrust member 12 is urged against the balls 11 of the mill by a plurality of pairs of units 19 connected to the thrust member by levers 14, 17. Each unit has a ram 18 in the form of a sleeve which is disposed in a cylinder 20 and receives the separator in the form of a piston 25, a ring 26 limiting the movement of the piston towards the closed end of the cylinder. The liquid pressure source 29 is connected to ports 27 in the cylinders to extend the units and the gas storage means 31 is connected by a reducing and non-return valve 32 to ports 28 so that gas pressure acts on one side of the piston and liquid pressure on the other. The liquid pressure is maintained at a constant value of, say, 1,000 lbs/sq. in. and the valve 32 is adjusted so that the pressure in the gas chamber is at a greater value, say 1,050 1bs/sq. in. The units thus act to load the thrust member 12 and in the event of the passage of a large fragment in the mill, the thrust member moves the rams into the cylinders and moves the pistons away from the rings 26 to compress the gas and absorb the extra load.
