A pressure fluid operated percussive drill has an auxiliary piston arranged transversely of the drill bit shank, the auxiliary piston being reciprocable and being coupled to the shank in such manner that the reciprocating movement is transformed into sequential intermittent rotation of the drill bit shank. As shown, a drill comprises a body 1 having two cylinders 2, 3 and two pistons 4, 5 of equal weight and percussive movement operating alternately. A transverse housing 12 is provided with a double acting piston 14 having recesses 18, 18<SP>1</SP> engaged by fingers 19, 19<SP>1</SP> on locking rings 23, 23<SP>1</SP> which a fitted over a sleeve 20 having two sets of teeth 22, 22<SP>1</SP> and an aperture to engage the hexagonal shaft of the drill bit. Locking pins 24 are inserted in the spaces between the teeth 22, 22<SP>1</SP> of the sleeve 20. When pressure fluid is admitted to one or other end of the housing 12 the piston is caused to reciprocate and the locking pins engage the sleeve 20 and one or other of the locking rings 23 or 23<SP>1</SP> producing intermittent rotation of the drill bit. The operation of the drill may be controlled by a piston valve, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown).
