Abstract

890,440. Pneumatic single-stroke apparatus. RIDLEY, J. C. April 29, 1960 [May 1, 1959], No. 14848/59. Class 8(2). [Also in Group XXIX] A pneumatic actuator comprises a doubleacting piston-and-cylinder unit and a mechanism for converting the movement of the piston 2, 3 in either direction into a rotary movement of an output shaft 13 axially-aligned with the axis of the piston-and-cylinder unit. The output shaft 13 is journalled in a housing 16 and is formed with a helical groove 14 engaged by balls 12 in a helical groove in a sleeve 10 extending from the piston 3 which is in a cylinder 25 and has a rod 4 extending through a partition 1 and connected to the second piston 2 in a cylinder 21. Fluid pressure can be supplied through ports 5, 6 to the cylinders to reciprocate the pistons, the balls 12 converting the axial movement of the pistons into a rotary movement of the shaft 13. Rotation of the pistons and sleeve is prevented by balls 17 running in longitudinal grooves 18 in the casing 16 or by keys. A passage 9 between the ends of the pistons equalizes the pressures in the outer chambers of the actuator. Increased effort in one direction or the other may be obtained by providing a valve in one or other of the pistons which permits the fluid-pressure to act on the outer surface of that piston.
