A shearing &c. machine comprises a fixed blade &c. 3, a ram 19 carrying a blade &c. 7, a back-gauge 33 adjustable in a direction normal to its length and means 89 for withdrawing the gauge away from blade 3 prior to a shearing &c. operation. The ram 19 supports spring- returned, fluid-pressure operated plungers 17 for pressing the work against a table 11 and the back-gauge against which the work engages. Brackets 39 support the gauge 33 from a plate 37 which has rails 51, Fig. 4, slidable on the flanges 43 of lead-screw housings 41 during adjustment of the gauge by a lead screw 47 at each end of plate 37. A nut 53 on each lead screw has a pin 55 in a hole in the plate 37, and rotation of the lead screws, which are coupled by a lateral shaft and bevel hears (Fig. 3, not shown) is by a hand wheel or hydraulic &c. power means. The housings 41 at one end are pivoted on eye-bolts 79 beneath a stiffener 21 for the ram 19, and at the other are connected to fluid-pressure jacks 89 which withdraw the gauge to the position depicted in broken lines before the shearing operation. The hold-down plungers 17 and jacks 89 are connected to the same supply line (Fig. 5, not shown), the plungers 17 holding the work before the increase in fluid-pressure is sufficient for the jacks to lift the gauge assembly away from the work.
