A ribbon lap machine with fluid pressure cylinders maintaining constant equal pressure on the lap pin bearing blocks has means responsive to stoppage of the machine to raise the lap roll from its supporting rolls. As the lap roll 26, Fig. 3 builds up to the desired diameter, an abutment 51 connected to the lap pin bearing block 42 raises a latch 52 and stops the machine. As the latch 52 is raised it engages the lower end of a plunger 115 to permit fluid pressure to build up in the cylinder 104, Fig. 7 of a valve assembly 86 to move a piston 101 and valve plunger 95 thereby exhausting fluid from the upper parts of cylinders 65, 66 to relieve pressure on the bearing blocks 42, 43 and permitting fluid to enter the lower parts of cylinders 65, 66 to raise the bearing blocks 42, 43. When starting the machine, the plunger 95 may be moved by a treadle 97, Fig. 3, even though the latch 52 may still be in engagement with the plunger 115.
