Abstract

A dry sizing agent is prepared by reacting amylose in the presence of a limited amount of water with an etherifying agent, an esterifying agent, an acetalizing agent, an etherifying agent and an esterifying agent or an acetalizing agent, or an esterifying agent and an acetalizing agent, drying the reaction mixture on a heated roller and grinding the resultant dry film into flakes of the desired size. The ethers may be the water-soluble alkyl ethers, hydroxyalkyl ethers and mixed alkyl and hydroxyalkyl ethers having 1 to 4 carbon atoms in the alkyl groups. Suitable etherifying agents are alkyl halides, dialkyl sulphates, alkyl esters of p-toluene sulphonic acid and diazomethane; and alkylene oxides and alkylene chlorohydrins for the preparation of the hydroxy alkyl ethers. Esterification may be effected by means of acetic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid, acrylic acid or methacrylic acid and semi acetals may be obtained by treatment with formaldehyde. Starch containing at least 50% amylose may also be used for the starting material. The product may be used for sizing acetate silk cotton and nylon as described in Group IV(c).ALSO:Textile yarns are sized by treatment with an aqueous solution of an ether, ester or semi-acetel of amylox or an amylose derivative containing both ether and ester groups or any amylose derivative which in addition to ether or ester groups contains semi acetal groups, which derivatives may be made by the methods described in (Group IV(a)). The yarns may be continuous filaments or fibres, may be of natural, semi-synthetic or synthetic nature and may be twisted or untwisted. In examples the yarn consists of cotton nylon and acetate silk, including diacetate and triacetate silk.
