894,795. Methods and apparatus for sterilizing metal articles. VACWELL ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Dec. 6, 1960 [Sept. 7, 1959], No. 30442/59. Class 81 (1). [Also in Group XI] A method of sterilizing metal articles such as surgical instruments consists in concentrating infra-red radiations on the articles in a vacuum. An apparatus for carrying out the method comprises an oven 2 or vacuum chamber of stainless steel or other suitable material which is highly polished on its interior surface and having one or more doors 3 for hermetically sealing the oven or chamber, one or more infra-red heaters 11 in the oven, and means for exhausting air from the oven after articles to be sterilized have been placed therein and the door or doors thereof closed. As shown in Fig. 1, the oven which is connected by a hose 8, a magnetically-actuated shut-off valve 9 and a conduit 10, and a magnetically-actuated safety-valve 8a with an exhauster system incorporating a pump 6, is provided with infra-red heaters 11 and tray 2b to support the articles to be sterilized. The heaters 11 are arranged to be automatically energized when the exhauster system has operated to produce, within the oven, the necessary degree of vacuum and are maintained at a predetermined temperature up to a maximum range of 250‹ C., conveniently by means of a temperature control 13, for a predetermined time, after which the oven 2 is cooled in vacuum until a predetermined temperature is reached when air or inert gas is supplied to the oven 2 by way of a filter 14 and a magnetically-actuated valve 15, the shut-off valve having actuated to disconnect the pump 6 from the oven.
