23,121. Tuite, M., and Dederich, W. Oct. 18. Disinfecting &c.-Meat or other substance to be preserved or sterilized is placed in the chamber a which can be hermetically closed. By suitably disposing the valve u, a partial vacuum may be produced in the chamber by the fan k, air and germs being expelled through the pipes n, p. A generator i of sterilizing-vapours or gases is then started, and by altering the position of the valve u the pipe p is closed and communication established with a branch pipe leading to the lower part of the chamber, so that circulation of the vapours through the chamber and this pipe is set up by the fan. The pressure in the chamber may be increased if desired by injecting carbonic acid or sterilized air. After the treatment, a vacuum is once more produced in the chamber to abstract the vapour, and then, by opening the valve h, air is drawn through. The air is first dried and sterilized by passing through trays e, f, g containing respectively cotton-wool, lime, and an antiseptic.
