Abstract

A sterilising apparatus comprises a sterilizing vessel 1, a vacuum pump connected to said vessel for evacuating the vessel, an isolating value 3, a main steam inlet 5, a steam valve 7 controlling the admission of steam, an air inlet valve 13 connecting an air inlet 15 with said main steam inlet, control means for cyclically operating said vacuum pump, said steam valve and said air valve respectively to provide a sterilising cycle consisting of a pre-vacuum period during which the isolating valve is opened and the vacuum pump is effective to evacuate the vessel, the steam and air valves being closed, a sterilising period during which the isolating valve is closed and the steam valve is opened to admit steam to the evacuated vessel, the air valve being closed, a post vacuum period during which the steam valve is closed and the isolating valve is opened to evacuate steam from the vessel and a vacuum breaking period during which the steam valve and the isolating valves are closed and the air valve is opened to admit air into the vessel; and a load simulator 19 for simulating the steam-air proportions in the sterilising vessel and for determining the length of the sterilising period independence on said proportions, the said load simulator comprising an upwardly extending portion 20 connected at its lower end with the interior of the sterilising vessel and closed at its other end, means 24 for sensing the temperature within said chamber, thermostat means e.g. a Bourden tube 26-27 connected to said temperature sensing means and responsive to the temperature sensed thereby, and means connecting said thermostat means to said control means, whereby said control means is effective to cause closing of the steam valve when the temperature sensed by said sensing means reaches a predetermined value. A valve 14 may connect the main steam inlet through pipe 16 to a motor-operated valve for injecting a series of short bursts of steam into the vessel 1 as described in Specification 977,645. The means connecting the thermostat to the control means may include a delay means for variably delaying the closing of the steam valve in dependence upon the temperature sensed by said sensing means.
