Abstract

A steam-jacketed autoclave (11) has an air-operated sliding door (13) which is sealed when closed by an inflatable seal housed in a groove around the door opening and interlocks which ensure that the door is fully closed before either the seal or the autoclave chamber are pressurized. When the door is closed and sealed a delay cylinder operates, after a slight time-lag, the switch of a solenoid valve to give the first of a series of air pulses which operate a 30-position electrical rotary switch in a timer unit which controls the sterilisation cycle. A vacuum pump (49) connected to the autoclave chamber is started up at the beginning of the cycle and runs throughout it. In the cycle air is first evacuated from the chamber down to a vacuum of 25\yF of mercury at which point a pulse of steam (admitted at 55) raises the pressure in the chamber again to a slight positive value. This sequence is twice repeated and then steam is admitted until a thermocouple in the draw line (64) shows 134 DEG F. After sterilisation filtered air is admitted at atmospheric pressure and a lamp indicates "cycle complete". If the sterilization temperature is not reacted a flashing indicator comes on at the sterilisation stage and remains on.
