The programme of an automatically controlled vacuum-type autoclave is controlled by a device for measuring the quantity of air present in the autoclave atmosphere after one or more steam injection/evacuation cycles. The device is a housing containing two chambers 49 and 50, interconnected at or near their bases, which is connected to a water line via conduit 54, to the evacuating pump via conduit 55 and to the lower part of the autoclave chamber by conduit 48. When in operation, the atmosphere in the autoclave is sampled, the vacuum pump is stopped and the device is isolated by magnetic valves in lines 48 and 54. Water is admitted, which condenses the steam and largely fills the chamber. Any air present remains trapped in the highest part of the device-the "auxiliary" chamber 57, and allows the central electrode 58 to remain isolated from the body of the device. Under these conditions, the programming circuit (Fig. 4, not shown) causes the injection/evacuation cycle to be repeated and the water is released from the measuring device via conduit 48. If the quantity of air present is insufficient to prevent the water level reaching the electrode, an electrical connection is made through the measuring device, which causes the programmer to pass on to the sterilization stage.
