Abstract
894,681. Luffing jib cranes. PRIESTMAN BROS. Ltd. Feb. 12, 1960 [Feb. 13, 1959], No. 5117/59. Class 78 (4). The jib 4, Fig. 1, of a crane is luffed by two hydraulic rams 11, 12 connected mechanically in series. Two similarly arranged rams may be provided mechanically in parallel with rams 11, 12. In one embodiment the cylinders of the rams 11, 12, Fig. 2, are pivotally or rigidly connected together, fluid being introduced into ram 11 through a pipe 30 and a passage 27 within a piston-rod 16. A hole 32 leads to a space 33 below the piston, from which fluid reaches the ram 12 through a pipe 34. In a second embodiment, the piston-rod 17 of the ram 12 is attached to the cylinder of ram 11, fluid reaching the underside of the piston of ram 12 through a pipe 34, a passage in the piston rod and a hole similar to the hole 32. As shown in Fig. 4, the piston-rods 16,17 may be connected end to end.
