A polarized relay has a built-up base comprising two identical H-shaped insulating parts which together constitute the coil former and are recessed to accommodate tongue-shaped contact armatures. As shown, each of the base parts 10 has outer limbs 11 and a cross-piece 12 with raised rims 112, 121 providing a cavity, between the assembled parts 10 in which a core 21 is clamped so as to be surrounded by the coil 20 wound on the cross-piece 12. The core 21 may be in two parts between the ends of which are clamped insulators 24 having embedded therein the ends of the resilient armatures 22 and the core 21 may also be provided with extensions 210 to concentrate the flux in the armatures. The armatures co-operate with fixed contact screws 23 threaded in terminals embedded in the parts 10 and the ends of the armatures extend into air gaps between polar member 31 in recesses 110 in the limbs 11. Permanent magnets 32 are polarized in the same direction and extend between grooves 310 in the members 31. A number of such relays may be mounted in alignment with locating-pins (not shown) in holes 118 and the alignment of recesses 114 allows for ease of connection to the armature terminals 220 and fixed contact terminals.
