Abstract

In the thermal decomposition of H2SO4 alkylation sludge (containing titratable acidity equivalent to at least 75% H2SO4) into SO2 and coke, by mixing with a stream of coke particles moving in a closed cycle as described in the parent Specification, a hydrocarbon oil substantially free from components boiling below 500 DEG , preferably 700 DEG F., is mixed with the sludge prior to mixing with coke. The oil is employed in an amount of 2-15% by weight of the sludge, while the temperature of the mixture does not exceed 650 DEG F.
