Abstract

Hydrogen sulphide is removed from gaseous mixtures by contacting the gaseous mixture with iron oxide dispersed in a plurality of containers through which the gaseous mixture is passed in sequence, the order of the sequence being changed at intervals, characterized in that sulphur dioxide is added to the gaseous mixture after substantially the whole of the hydrogen sulphide originally present has been removed, and then passing this mixture through the remaining containers of iron oxide. In addition to changing the order of sequence, the direction of flow may also be changed, the changes being so made that the water content of the iron oxide does not fall substantially below its initial value. Preferably the sulphur dioxide is added to the mixture as it enters either the ultimate or the penultimate container in the sequence. Specification 920,681 is referred to.
