Classes 34(2) and 64(2) In a process and apparatus for the treatment of solid material of small particle size according to the parent Specification wherein the flow velocity of the stream of gas carrying the particles in a helical path through a heated tube remains substantially constant throughout the length of the tube, the velocity of the carrier gas stream is maintained substantially constant by enlarging the cross-sectional area between the inner member and the tube in the direction of flow of the gas by reducing the cross-section of the inner member and/or providing the tube of frusto-conical form. The inclination of the guide vanes disposed on the inner member may be varied along the length of the tube to make larger the ratio of the tangential velocity of the gas to its axial velocity at the tube inlet than at the tube outlet.
