Abstract
893,672. Making grid-electrodes; soldering. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. March 9, 1959 [March 17, 1958], No. 7360/58. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). In a method of making a grid - electrode, the grid-wire 2 is wound on supportrods 1 spaced by a mandrel 7 which is made from a material having a higher coefficient of thermal expansion than that of the wire 2 or heated to a higher temperature than the wire during brazing of the wire to the support-rods, so that the mandrel expands more than the wire. The wire may be of molybdenum coated, as by a printing process, with silver &c. brazing material on part of its circumference, and the mandrel of a cobalt-and-chromium alloy which forms an oxide layer when heated. The silver may be applied before or after winding the wire. The mandrel is thinner than the wire, which it supports in grooves 6, and is heated electrically to effect brazing, preferably in a neutral or reducing atmosphere. The heated mandrel expands the wire beyond its elastic limit.
