881,309. Making heat-exchanger tubes; soldering. ESCHER WYSS A.G. March 25, 1958 [April 18, 1957], No. 9557/58. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). In soldering fins to the external surface of a heat-exchanger tube the tube, fins and interposed solder material are introduced into a protecting tube closed at one end and heat is applied to the heat-exchanger tube while it is within the protecting tube with the other end of the protecting tube freely open to the atmosphere, the radial clearance between the fins and the protecting tube being so small that the amount of oxygen in the air in the small space is insufficient to produce sealing detrimental to the soldering. In soldering fins formed by a helically wound corrugated strip 1 on a heat-exchanger tube 2 with solder material between the strip and tube, the assembly is placed in a close fitting tube 3, e.g. of quartz closed at one end by a plug 4. The tube 3 is mounted on rollers 5 to pass it through a high-frequency induction coil 6. The assembly may be heated by resistance.
