Abstract
799,083. Making gilled tubes. CARRIER ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. Sept. 6, 1956 [Nov. 25, 1955], No. 27389/56. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XIII] A tube 10 for intended use in the manufacture of a serpentine heat-exchanger element is provided with groups of fins thereon the fins 12 of one group being of lesser diameter than are the fins 13 of the groups on either side thereof. In the preferred form a single helical fin is formed by winding on to the tube a ribbon of suitable width and thickness the width of the ribbon being reduced at intervals by a slitting device before the winding operation, so that the narrower portions of the ribbon form the fins 12 of lesser diameter than the fins 14 formed by the wider ribbon portions when the ribbon is wound on to the tube. Ultimately the tube is bent to a serpentine form, as shown in Fig. 2, the reduced diameter of the fins 12 at the bend portions enabling bends of relatively small radius to be formed.
