Abstract
984,607. Travelling-wave tubes. FERRANTI Ltd. July 18, 1963 [July 19, 1962], No. 27695/62. Heading H1D. A method of manufacturing a travelling-wave tube of the kind having a slow-wave structure 11 of generally circular cross-section located coaxially within a tubular metal envelope 12 includes the steps of (a) inserting the slow-wave structure 11 coaxially within the envelope 12 and supporting the structure in that position by three or more compression members 13 extending across the space between the structure 11 and the inner surface of the envelope 12, this step being effected without using appreciable force, (b) locating the envelope 12 with not more than slight clearance in a surrounding yoke 21 of lower coefficient of thermal expansion than that of the metal of the envelope 12, steps (a) and (b) being carried out in either order, (c) heating the assembly to cause plastic deformation of the envelope 12 due to the restriction of its expansion by the yoke 21, and (d) allowing the assembly to cool to room temperature, thereby causing the envelope 12 to contract and so grip the slow-wave structure 11 firmly by way of the compression members 13.
