Abstract

798,945. Making filaments for electron discharge tubes; destructible cores. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., JONES, D. J., and GOSSLING, B. S. Nov. 28, 1955 [Dec. 3, 1954], No. 35096/54. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XL (a)] A filament of refractory metal, such as silica tungsten wire, of substantially flattened zig-zag shape for use in an electric discharge device, is made by winding the wire upon a ductile metal mandrel, pressing the mandrel and wire so as to flatten it to the required shape and chemically removing the ductile metal. The flattened filament is then heat treated to set it. The silica tungsten wire is preferably first wound on a tungsten wire mandrel and is then removed and placed on a mandrel of annealed copper wire. After flattening, which may take place at a temperature between 200 ‹C. and 400 C., the copper is removed by dissolving in nitric acid. The flattened filament is then heat treated in a hydrogen atmosphere at 1400‹ C. for ten minutes. The mandrel or the spiral may be heated before or during the pressing so as to remove residual stresses. The tungsten filament is preferably for use as a cathode in an X-ray tube. The flattened filament is disposed within a groove formed in a machined nickel cathode head, with the filament disposed parallel to the face of the head opposite a copper anode. An example is given of the dimensions of a particular filament.
