893,551. Tea manufacture. COLOMBO COMMERCIAL CO. Ltd., and SMITH, T. E. R. Aug. 12, 1958 [Sept. 9, 1957], No. 25922/58. Class 129. [Also in Group II] In separating stalk and fibrous substances from dry tea, it is deposited from a hopper 15 on the inclined upper run of a conveyer belt 4, of which the surface, at least, is pliable and resilient, in a layer whose thickness is controlled by a rotary spreader 13 between the hopper and the upper end of the conveyer and which, after being spread, is engaged by an adjustable pressure roller 5. As shown, the conveyer belt 4 is suspended in a frame 1 between a driven pulley 2 and an idler pulley 3 and is inclined to the horizontal at less than, but preferably just less than, the angle of repose of made tea. Roller 5 is supported in bearings 6 carried in bellcrank levers 7 rockable about fulcra 8 and is biased by an adjustable compression spring. If roller 5 is not placed above pulley 2, as shown, a pressure plate is provided under belt 4. The spreader 13 has serrated edges and is mounted in bearings on cranked levers 12 of adjustable height being driven from one of the pulleys 2 or 3. The hopper 15 has a rear flap door 18 to facilitate the clearance of refuse. The process may be carried out in stages with several sets of apparatus or several rollers 5 and one or more spreaders 13 may be provided in conjunction with one conveyer belt.
