Class 146(1) A loose-leaf binder comprises two sets of oppositely disposed curved prongs, wherein each set is carried on an elongated base strip provided along one edge with a number of spaced hinge knuckles, the two sets of hinge knuckles being mounted on a spindle 15 carried by the spine of a cover and movable in an axial direction relative to the hinge knuckles, said spindle having a number of axially spaced locking projections 20 which in one extreme position of the spindle engage in at least some of the hinge knuckles of each set to prevent separation of the prongs and in the other extreme position disengage these hinge knuckles to permit rotation thereof about the spindle and hence the separation of the prongs. Some knuckles 18 of each set are provided with grooves 19 in which the projections 20 lock, the remainder of the knuckles in each set, i.e. the knuckles 21, being formed with larger bores 22, so that on sliding the spindle against the action of spring 25, the projections disengage grooves 19 and enter the larger bores 22 permitting rotation of the prongs about. the spindle. This latter movement moves the grooves 19 out of alignment with the projections 20 which bear against knuckles 18 under the action of spring 25, whereby the prongs are held positively in the open position. The two sets of prongs abut or are staggered with respect to each other, telescope one set into the other, or, if one set has prongs of smaller radius than the prongs of the other set, one set closes inside the other set.
