Abstract

893,340. Hydraulic pit props. DOWTY MINING EQUIPMENT Ltd. Oct. 9, 1959 [Oct. 9, 1958], No. 32286/58. Class 20(2) [Also in Group XXIX] In a hydraulic prop having relief and release valves 85, 87 in a cap 71, the release valve 87 is actuated by a member 88 which is pivoted about a vertical axis 89. The prop comprises an upper cylinder 17, which is slidable in a lower cylinder, and an inner tube 18, which receives a ram on the lower cylinder, the upper cylinder being raised by a piston 80 reciprocated by a crank 72. An inlet valve 81 allows fluid to be drawn from a reservoir, located between the cylinder 17 and the tube 18, by the piston through tubes 78, 79 into a duct 83 which also communicates with the reservoir via the relief valve 85. The release valve 87 allows the pressure in the prop to fall until the valve 81 is opened by a spring 93 allowing a more rapid flow of liquid. During release, the piston 80 is in its upper position so that the valve 76 is held open by a pin 77 to connect the pressure space under the piston 80 with the duct 83. A chain &c. may be attached to the opening 90 in the member 88.
