Abstract

A composition comprises a compound susceptible to oxidation, e.g. a lubricating oil which may be a mineral oil or a diester oil, fuel oil, turbine oil, transformer oil, essential oil or soap, together with 1, 1-bis-[21-hydroxy-31, 51-di-tert.-butyl-phenyl]-butane as antioxidant. The lubricating compositions containing 1, 1-bis-[21-hydroxy-31, 51-di-tert.-butyl-phenyl) butane which are claimed in Specification 818,967, are disclaimed.ALSO:A composition comprises rubber together with 1,1-bis-[21-hydroxy-31,51-di-tert. butyl-phenyl]-butane as antioxidant, e.g. in the proportion of 0,25-2,0% by weight. Specification 818,967 is referred to.ALSO:The invention comprises 1,1-bis-(21-hydroxy-31, 51 - di - tert. - butyl - phenyl) - butane which may be prepared by condensing n-butyraldehyde with 2,4-di-tert.-butyl phenol under dehydrating conditions in the presence of an acidic catalyst. The reaction is preferably carried out at about 30 DEG C. in the presence of hydrogen chloride gas, a 3 : 1 mixture by weight of sulphuric acid and water or a mixture of concentrated hydrogen chloride and calcium chloride. The bis-phenol may be used as an antioxidant, e.g. for aldehydes. Specification 818,967 is referred to.
