Abstract

A cold drawing machine for synthetic linear polymer filaments or yarn comprises in vertical alignment, in the following descending order, (1) a yarn supply package support, (2) a snubbing pin, (3) a feed roll having an idler roll beneath it and urged resiliently against it, (4) a draw roll with its separator roll, and (5) a conventional wind up device for the drawn yarn, in which machine the yarn travels downwards to the feed roll, and thence upwards to the snubbing pin, where it turns and passes downwards to the draw roll. As shown, a polyhexamethylene adipamide yarn proceeds from the yarn supply package 1, which in this case is a cake, through the guides 2, <PICT:0893076/IV (a)/1> 3 to the cork-covered idler roll 5, and thence through the nip between the idler roll and the feed roll 6 upwards to the snubbing pin 8. Guide 3 is mounted on the traverse bar 4 which imparts a to and fro movement to the yarn. The yarn is guided against the feed roll by the guide 7 and the idler roll is urged against the feed roll by spring 11, acting through the lever 9. From the snubbing pin the yarn proceeds downwards to the draw roll 12 and its separator roll 13, both of which it encircles three times and by which it is drawn at a 3:2 draw ratio. The yarn leaves the draw roll through guide 14 on its way to a conventional bottle bobbin. The machine reduces the incidence of nubs in the drawn yarn without the necessity for positioning the yarn supply package inconveniently high. Specification 543,466 is referred to.
